The widest range of current iPhones available on the official Apple Online Store page may raise doubts even among people who have been familiar with the equipment of the American manufacturer for several years. To understand and choose "Best iPhone" with an acceptable price tag, you need an integrated approach to the issue. In this material we will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of certain iPhone models and help you make a choice.

At the time of writing, there are 8 iPhone models on official sale: the latest iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, last year’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (), previous versions of the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus (). As for the iPhone X, iPhone 6s/6s Plus and iPhone SE, they are officially discontinued. But since these devices are still on sale from official resellers, this year we will leave them in our review.

Note: iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 were not included in the list because they are not officially sold by Apple in Russia (but some resellers do). And even now a lot of restored “fives” and “sixes” are sold under the guise of new ones (details and). Be careful.

The smartphones are equipped with an Apple A9 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 12 MP main and 5 MP front cameras.

All modern features like 3D Touch (a technology that allows you to determine the force of pressing the display), Taptic Engine tactile feedback, and a second-generation Touch ID fingerprint sensor (when the iPhone is not charging) are present.

The iPhone 6s Plus model from its younger 4.7-inch brother, in addition to the larger display diagonal, is distinguished by a more capacious battery that provides impressive battery life and the presence of optical image stabilization when shooting through the main camera.

iPhone 6s is available in space gray, silver, gold and rose gold.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are quite powerful devices that are still relevant today. Currently, 32 and 128 GB versions are available for sale (the 16 GB model was discontinued after the start of sales of the iPhone 7).

Prices for iPhone 6s in Russia

You can purchase the basic 32 GB version of the iPhone 6s from retailers in Russia from 29,990 rubles. The option with 128 GB of internal memory will cost 34,990 rubles.

The cost of iPhone 6s Plus 32 GB is 26,990 rubles.

iPhone SE is suitable for those who do not like modern “shovels” with a large display diagonal or who want to purchase a relatively modern device, but at a lower price than the iPhone 6s. The gadget will be as relevant as the iPhone 6s - for the next 2-3 years. Supports iOS 12. 32 GB and 128 GB models are available.

The only drawback is the lack of a 3.5 mm audio jack, but it seems that Apple has set a new fashion trend, because competing manufacturers have also begun to release models without it. The popularity of wireless headphones and accessories with a Lightning interface has increased dramatically.

The 5.5-inch model has acquired a large number of exclusive features: a dual main camera (two 12 MP sensors with a wide-angle and a telephoto lens) with a 2x main and 10x digital zoom and 3 GB of RAM.

Currently, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are sold in two versions with 32 and 128 GB storage.

Battery capacity has decreased slightly, but battery life remains the same due to the use of a more energy-efficient processor. Among the peripheral modules, we can also highlight Bluetooth 5.0, which replaced version 4.2.

iPhone X

In 2017, Apple released three smartphones at once, but for those who want to use exclusively “hi-end” devices, the choice has been narrowed to one. iPhone X () is an order of magnitude more expensive than its counterparts, but it also offers much richer functionality.

Like the iPhone 8/8 Plus, the 2017 flagship received a body with a glass back panel, but the front of the device has changed dramatically. First of all, the 5.8-inch screen, which occupies almost the entire panel area, and the absence of a Home button are striking.

Its functions are taken over by an operating system that supports new control gestures, as well as Face ID user facial identification technology, which replaced the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

At the same time, despite the largest display diagonal in the line, the dimensions of the “tens” are not much larger than the dimensions of the 4.7-inch models.

Other advantages of the iPhone X include a Super Retina HD screen with a resolution of 2436 × 1125 pixels (458 pixels per inch), an improved camera with optical stabilization technology on both lenses, Portrait modes with functionality, and a function for the front camera.

Let us repeat that with the release of iOS 12, the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus did not receive a function that allows you to adjust the level of background blur.

In the fall of 2018, the iPhone X was discontinued, but can still be found for sale at major resellers.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

Design and screen

The new flagship uses exactly the same display module as last year's iPhone X - an OLED matrix, resolution 2436 × 1125 pixels (458 ppi), the same contrast (1,000,000:1), brightness (625 cd/m²) and set of supported technologies (HDR10, Dolby Vision, True Tone, 3D Touch, etc.).

From a design point of view, there are only two significant changes, one good and the other, as usual, bad. Good, of course, should be called the appearance of a new golden color of the case, which does not look like an “Arabic road”, but is very modern and technologically advanced.

The negative point was the asymmetry at the bottom edge of the iPhone XS / XS Max case, which can drive a perfectionist crazy. To the left of the Lightning connector there are 7 holes for the speaker, while to the right there are 4 holes and a plastic insert (“antenna”). Probably, the designers had to take such a step reluctantly and under pressure from engineers demanding better conditions for signal passage due to the expansion of the list of supported standards ().

Another announced change is stronger glass, but a number of tests carried out by various bloggers and reviewers show that there has been no revolution in this direction, and it is still just as easy to shoot a “web” across the screen or back panel.

Performance

In terms of this indicator, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are significantly superior to the iPhone X, and it is performance that is responsible for such a high cost of the new product. In 2018, Apple managed to significantly outpace its competitors in the nanometer race - while most vendors are having difficulty establishing a 7-nm process technology to create innovative processors, the Apple corporation is already equipping the new iPhone XS, XS Max and even iPhone XR with them.

As a result, the 6-core Apple A12 Bionic with a clock frequency of 2.6 GHz (predecessor 2.1 GHz) is approximately 20% faster than the Apple A11 Bionic, 50% faster with graphics and 40% more efficient in battery management. Thanks to this, the iPhone XS lasts for half an hour, and the iPhone XS Max for an hour and a half longer than the iPhone X.

Naturally, the secondary processor modules have also been improved - the graphics coprocessor, the M12 Motion coprocessor and the Neural Engine, which now processes 10 times more tasks (5 trillion) in one second.

In addition, new Apple smartphones have received an additional gigabyte of RAM and now cope much better with work when loaded into RAM large quantity applications.

Cameras

The iPhone XS camera itself (as well as the iPhone XS Max) has undergone virtually no changes, but Apple programmers have worked hard on it. The only innovation that you can “touch” is the increased size of the wide-angle lens matrix, which now has a pixel size of 1.4µm (1.0µm for the iPhone X). But from a software point of view, iPhone lovers now have some really interesting opportunities.

First of all, advanced users will notice improved performance of the iPhone XS camera with objects in the background, especially those that are in difficult lighting conditions for shooting (in the shadows or overexposure). Thanks to SmartHDR technology, it will be possible to see in the pictures what the iPhone X’s optics could simply “attribute” to the side of darkness or light. Another innovation is the ability to adjust the level of background blur on ready-made portrait photographs thanks to the new feature.

Face ID

Long-time iPhone users remember how significant the difference was in the speed of the Touch ID fingerprint scanner between the pioneer of this technology, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6S. So, in the case of the iPhone XS, one cannot expect the same progress, although a technology update was announced at the presentation on September 12, 2018. Practical tests show that the speed of recognizing the user's face has increased slightly compared to the iPhone X.

Water and dust protection

Apple is one of those companies that will play it safe three times before they declare that a device meets any standards, especially when it comes to security. For the new iPhone XS, Phil Schiller boldly declared the IP68 standard and assured that the smartphone can be lowered into water to a depth of two meters for no more than 30 minutes. In addition, the corporation's top manager said that during tests the gadget was also doused with other liquids. This statement, as expected, caused a response from the community - observers and bloggers began to massively drown the new iPhones in whatever they had to (chlorinated and sea water, beer, juice, etc.), and generally confirmed the assumption that the new case is protected from moisture and dirt much better than the iPhone X.

Battery

The battery capacity of the iPhone XS is lower than that of last year's model - 2658 mAh versus 2716 mAh, however, as mentioned above, the average operating time without an additional power source for the new flagship is as much as 30 minutes higher, which is due to the use of an innovative processor.

Dual SIM support

It deserves special attention. All three new iPhone models of 2018 allow you to use the usual nanoSIM along with the electronic eSIM. The latter is not supported in Russia, as well as in most other countries of the world, but some experts predict the launch of the technology by domestic operators in the near future. In addition, especially for the Chinese market, Apple released a special edition version with a double-sided tray for two physical nanSIM cards, which will certainly be in demand in Russia (it works)

As mentioned above, this year is the first time Apple has equipped all models with the same performance package, further blurring the differences between the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. If previously there were obvious differences between 4.7- and 5.5-inch devices (more RAM, dual camera), now buyers essentially just have to choose between a smartphone with a 5.8-inch screen, dimensions: 143.6 × 70.9 × 7.7 mm, weight 177 grams and a smartphone with a 6.5-inch display, dimensions: 157.5 × 77.4 × 7.7 mm, weight 208 grams.

It is noteworthy that even resolution will not play any role in the choice, because both displays have identical pixel density - 458 pixels per inch. The only difference is the slightly thinner frames of the iPhone XS Max, where the screen covers 84.4% of the front panel area.

It's also worth mentioning that the iPhone XS Max has a larger battery (3400 mAh versus 2800 mAh) than the iPhone XS, which significantly increases battery life.

And, of course, the deciding factor when choosing can be the price.

Apple introduced three new iPhones at once. In this review, we’ll look at the key characteristics of the new products, discuss prices and dates when the devices go on sale. At the same time, we’ll figure out what happened with two SIM cards. Let's go!

This time, the Apple 2018 presentation did without big words and incredible numbers. We immediately started announcing new products: the Apple Watch, which has been published for a long time, and three new iPhones.

What exactly did they present?

Last year, three new iPhones were shown at once. This fall the situation has not changed. We still have three new products and a mess in our heads. But let's try to figure it out.

Or a cheaper iPhone turned into an iPhone XR. A real revolution has happened for this branch of smartphones. A huge, frameless screen, a new processor, a pumped-up battery, a portrait mode in the camera and a bunch of new colors. Just a bomb!

Until recently, the flagship acquired a successor - the iPhone XS. Same size, but more advanced smartphone for the same money.

But s jumped over everyone and turned to the iPhone XS Max. The same functions as the XS, only with a huge screen and more pleasant battery life.

And now more details. Let's go through the chronology of the presentation.

iPhone XS

Successor and star of the program. It costs a thousand dollars in the database, like the previous ten.

Design

His main feature remained in place. The 5.8-inch screen retains the same resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels, which give a density of 458 ppi.

Of course, an OLED matrix is used. As always, the best. Contrast 1,000,000:1, brightness 625 nits, True Tone, support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, P3 profile, 3D Touch - everything that was before is in place.

It is reported that the glass front and back has now become even stronger. And coupled with surgical steel, the device received water protection according to the IP68 standard, which means immersion in water up to 2 meters and for 30 minutes. We were told right from the stage that if you dropped your smartphone in the pool, then it’s okay. Nothing will happen to the device. You can also pour juice or beer over the new product. No problem again.

By the way, it was IP67.

As expected, a new color was introduced - gold. It looks fresh, expensive and solid. Just what was required from the new color.

Under the hood

Of course, inside we have a new A12 Bionic processor, which is now created using a 7-nanometer process technology. Previously it was 10 nm. This means more efficient power consumption and increased productivity. In numbers the situation looks like this:

  • 2 productive cores are 15% faster and 40% more energy efficient
  • 4 regular cores show the same performance, but now consume 50% less energy
  • The 4-core graphics accelerator accelerated by one and a half times

In addition, the new chipset includes an 8-core neural unit responsible for machine learning.

Another interesting number. Thanks to the 8-core neural unit, the new “stone” is capable of processing up to 5 trillion operations. A11 Bionic boasted a ceiling of 600 billion operations. In addition, the Neural Engine, thanks to the Core ML platform, is up to 9 times faster than the corresponding system in the A11 Bionic. At the same time, the neural unit consumes 10 times less energy.

Cameras

Compared to the top ten, the new smartphone has not received any changes in numbers. Modules of 12 megapixels each are installed on the back. The six-element lens boasts an aperture of f/1.8 for the regular lens and f/2.4 for the telephoto. In addition, there is dual optical stabilization.

With exactly the same numbers, Apple claims that the quality of the images has improved. Several new technologies contribute to this.

Take Smart HDR, for example, which is responsible for improved processing of light and dark areas in pictures. In addition, algorithms have learned to determine depth of field even more accurately in portrait mode. For this, the “Depth” function or variable aperture is also used: from f/1.4 to f/16 - any value. You can adjust the degree of blur both directly during the shooting process and after, in the Photo application.

Let me remind you that up to this point a variable aperture had only been found in Samsung Galaxy S9, and . Moreover, in Korean flagships, physical aperture blades are responsible for this, which either narrow or open. How things are going with the iPhone XS is still unknown. Most likely, the software is responsible for the process.

In addition, “Depth” is also available for the TrueDepth front camera.

Regarding video recording, the improvements are purely evolutionary. More detailed elaboration of dark areas, improved picture in poor lighting and finally stereo sound recording. Surprisingly, until recently, not a single iPhone could record stereo. This gap has now been closed.

Rest

Let's just list a few more new features:

  • maximum memory configuration increased to 512 GB
  • 4 GB RAM (no official confirmation yet)
  • more spacious stereo sound
  • Face ID now recognizes faces even faster. Not a word about the possibility of unlocking in a horizontal position.
  • XS battery life is 30 minutes longer than iPhone X
  • and XS Max works an hour and a half longer than the same ten

One more thing

Dual SIM card!

But don't rush to rejoice. The first SIM card will be the familiar Nano SIM. But the second role is played by eSIM or digital SIM card.

The only country in the world where there will be two slots for two real SIM cards is China. Russia and other regions are in flight. Although, perhaps, some impudent MP will demand that Apple change the situation. If anything, I didn’t hint anything to anyone.

iPhone XS Max

We look at the most expensive and most sophisticated device, and at the same time determine how it differs from the iPhone XS. The main difference was the huge, frameless 6.5-inch screen.

For such a diagonal, engineers had to increase the resolution to 2688 x 1242 pixels. However, in total they give a density of the same 458 pixels per inch.

This is where the differences between the Max version and the regular XS end. Well, except for the slightly improved battery life and price. More on the latter later.

iPhone XR

This is, so to speak, an entry-level smartphone. The most affordable, with the latest hardware, now with a frameless screen, Face ID, a new processor and a relatively compact body. Despite the 6.1-inch LCD panel.

A whole bunch of new colors makes you think about repeating the experience with the iPhone 5C? Bad experience. I am sure that a new approach with a bunch of colors at the start will be much more successful. By the way, the photo below shows all the available colors. There are a lot of them, they are all bright and juicy.

It’s a bit of a shame that the smartphone was equipped with an IPS screen, and not an AMOLED screen, as in its older brothers. However, current goodies, including, for example, True Tone and the P3 profile, are still announced.

  • resolution 1792 x 828 pixels
  • density 326 points
  • contrast ratio 1400:1
  • brightness 625 nits

Like its more sophisticated relatives, the XR received a top-end processor. And I’m betting in advance that this particular smartphone will become the most productive in the company’s history. The situation is repeated when the device received a powerful processor, but a noticeably smaller number of pixels to process them. Hence the superiority, which, however, is noticeable only in synthetic tests.

There is one camera installed at the back, but it is “completely new”:

  • resolution 12 MP
  • 6-element f/1.8 lens aperture
  • optical stabilization

The most important thing is that even with one camera, portrait mode is now available. Now, those who want to save money will not be left behind by modern photo technologies. This makes me happy.

The front camera can also blur the background, and like all other smartphones with daylight, studio and contour light effects. The “Depth” mode is in place.

  • resolution 7 MP
  • aperture f/2.2
  • Full HD video recording at 60 fps

It is also important to mention autonomy. The new product lasts an hour and a half longer than . A decent indicator.

Screen size, number of cameras (one on the back and one on the front), colors, prices and sizes. Let's look at the latter below in one large table, where, by the way, I compared all the new products with their predecessors.

And yes, new iPhone The XS Max has become Apple's heaviest smartphone, but still not the largest. still occupies an honorable place as a “shovel” in the family.

Prices for new iPhones

Firstly, the most affordable new iPhone has gone up in price again. For another 50 dollars. In other words, now the starting price tag for the new generation starts not at $699, but at $749.

The following starting points:

  • iPhone XS will be available for $999
  • iPhone XS Max price starts at $1099

The release of new devices marked a drop in cost for the remaining generations. Let's look at all the models in one big table.

Noticed an important nuance? Yes, yes, no longer for sale. It was replaced by new frameless devices. But 8s and 7s are still on sale, along with Plus versions.

When?

Pre-orders for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will begin this Friday, September 14th. The global start of sales is scheduled for September 21.

Russia is not included in the first wave of countries. However, the release of the iPhone XS and its Max version is just around the corner - September 28, that is, literally a week after the global launch. Accordingly, we can assume that Russian pre-orders will begin on the 21st.

XR will have to wait a bit. Accept orders for new model will start only on October 19th. And you can buy the iPhone XR on October 26, 2018. This is global data that in this case are also true for Russia.

Software

Two more releases to complete.

iOS 12 will be available for download very soon - September 17th. Reading mine detailed analysis systems And desktop macOS Mojave will be available to install on September 24. I wrote about her quite recently here.

Apple has sent out invitations to an event on September 12, where it is expected to unveil new additions to its iPhone lineup.

In typical cryptic style, Apple provided scant clues in the invitation that the presentation would take place at the Steve Jobs Theater on its campus. spaceship in the Silicon Valley of Cupertino.

The invitations included the words “Gather Together” under a large gold circle.

Speculation includes talk that Apple has introduced three new iPhone models, adding some of the features from the premium iPhone X, which debuted last year with a thousand-dollar price tag.

The only thing left to announce is the date of the iPhone announcement itself. Apple sent out invitations to its fall iPhone events at the end of August. But given that it's still a week or two away, we'll still have to wait a little while before we find out when Apple will unveil its new 2018 lineup.

However, we will all take a risk and try to predict the date ourselves. Based on previous event dates, the consensus is that Apple likely has something planned during the first two weeks of September, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Almost every iPhone announcement over the past decade has met these criteria.

Apple historically holds September events to showcase new iPhone models, and the company is expected to stay true to that pattern this year. What will the company surprise us with in 2018?

iPhone XS

There are rumors that the successor to the Apple iPhone X will be called the iPhone XS. There are no surprises, although apparently Apple wasn't entirely convinced by the name, because XS could either mean another smaller version of the outgoing model, or it could be an excess of numbers.

We've sorted out the names, now let's talk about the varieties. There will be three versions of this phone. Two high-end models with OLED screens, one of which will be the Plus model, and one cheaper model with an LCD display. All three new models will have the mark required for Face ID technology, which means there is no longer a Home button.

iPad Pro

It's been almost a year since the iPad Pro was last updated, and Apple is expected to update it at its September event.

Like the iPhone, the new iPad models are expected to use Face ID rather than Touch ID, so we won't see a Home button on the new iPad Pro. You can also expect the 10.5in version to be replaced by the 11in model - the screen will be larger thanks to smaller bezels, but there won't be any significant changes in size.

Apple Watch Series 4

The Apple Watch is also expected to be updated. It looks like it will have a larger display, but thanks to smaller bezels rather than larger display sizes.

It is also expected that the side button and digital crown will be modified so that the watch can be more water-resistant.

AirPower

It's been a year since Apple promised it would launch AirPower, a wireless charging mat that can be used with iPhones, Apple Watches and AirPods. Will the ghost rug finally launch? It looks like it. (let's face it, it would be a blow to Apple's reputation if it wasn't!)

iOS 12 and macOS 14

The September event will also include Apple confirming when the latest version of iOS (in this case iOS 12) and macOS (Mojave) will be made available to the public in their final form.

The operating systems are currently in beta testing, as previously announced at WWDC 2018. They will likely be available for download before the end of September.

Possible new products

Apple has a wide variety of products in its pipeline. What do we expect to see new in it in the near future? We expect to find out either at the September or at the second event in October.

AirPods

It's possible that the new AirPods will launch alongside the AirPower mat, two years after Apple's wireless earbuds first launched. Although rumors point to a more significant update in 2019, with better water resistance.

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air hasn't been updated since 2015, and it looks like Apple will shut down the model soon. When that happens, it looks like Apple will introduce a new 13-inch Mac laptop at the same price - around £1,000/$1,000.

Whether it's a MacBook Air or a 13-inch MacBook remains to be seen, but it looks like there will be changes to the Air.

MacBook

In any case, we expect an update to the MacBook. Perhaps Apple introduced the 13-inch MacBook to sit next to the 12in version. And if this happens, the price of entry into the range may decrease. We expect the 12-inch MacBook could start at £200 or more, bringing its price down so it starts at £1,000/$1,000.

Mac mini

The Mac mini is no longer loved at Apple, just as the MacBook Air has remained untouched since 2014. Hopefully it'll get some attention soon - rumors suggest it will - although it's possible we won't see this update until 2019.

iMac

It makes sense that Apple would introduce updates to its range of iMacs before the end of the year. Like the MacBook Pro, they should have more cores - these are six-core processors, not quad-core processors. In fact, we might even see an eight-core variant!

Plus, it turned twenty years old in 2018, so it's the best time for an update, we think.

iPhone SE 2

Not so likely, but rumors have surfaced that the iPhone SE could see an update. This is the popular iPhone and is the smallest and cheapest mobile phone.

However, most "cheap" iPhone rumors seem to point to a cheaper version of the iPhone X, and we think it will still be quite expensive. If you're hoping for a new 4in model, you might be interested that code has surfaced indicating that the new phone may come with an older iPhone 7 processor, and it could very well be an SE upgrade.

HomePod mini

Finally, it's been almost a year since the HomePod went on sale, so we're not expecting anything just yet, but there have been a few rumors that Apple will launch a cheaper, smaller HomePod.

iPhone X is Apple's most advanced iPhone yet. With a treasure trove of features completely new to the iPhone line, it truly deserves its title as an innovation leader.

With a lot of talk about new features and exciting new things on board, it can be easy to get lost in all the improvements that Tim Cook, Craig Federighi and Phillip Schiller showed off on stage. Therefore, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the main innovations of the device in order.

Apple has gone back to basics with the iPhone X design... in theory. Just like the iPhone 4 a few years ago, the shiny new smartphone comes in a glass body with an aluminum frame. But that's where most of the similarities are. ends. The glass has undergone a 7-layer painting process, the purpose of which is to highlight the colors of the case. TO Additionally, the glass itself has been reinforced with an internal frame made of steel and copper, which reportedly makes it the strongest glass ever used in a smartphone. We believe many people will want to drop test this $999 phone as soon as possible.

Frameless design

With an exceptional screen-to-front ratio of 81.23%, the iPhone X is on par with other bezel-less smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, Essential Phone and the exotic Xiaomi Mi MIX 2. Despite the big 5, With an 8-inch screen, the iPhone X is not much larger than the regular iPhone 8/7/6s/6, which is an achievement.

The home button with a fingerprint scanner disappeared into oblivion, and there were quite good reasons for its disappearance. iPhone X is now fully gesture-controlled, allowing you to unlock your smartphone and perform other actions without using buttons. To return to the main screen, just swipe up from the bottom.

Improved camera

The iPhone has a larger and faster 12-megapixel rear camera sensor, accompanied by a new color filter, as well as larger pixels. The secondary telephoto camera also receives optical stabilization for the first time since such an option appeared in the Galaxy Note 8. The main wide-angle camera has an F/1.8 aperture, while the telephoto lens has an F/2.4 aperture.

There have also been improvements to the ISP (image processing engine), which is capable of detecting elements in the scene you are about to capture. It also delivers fast pixel processing, wide color capture, faster autofocus, and better HDR photos.

What does this mean for the average user? Most likely, improved quality of photos and videos from the camera, as well as an increased level of convenience, thanks to new additions to the camera application. With 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second and ultra-low 240 FPS Slow-Mo at 1080p resolution, iPhone X doubles the cinematography capabilities of previous Apple iPhones, making it a standout and fairly pricey device for aspiring videographers who want to easily capture cinematic footage while traveling. .

Updated portrait mode

In portrait mode, Portrait Lighting lets you artificially change the lighting of an image you've taken, even after you've captured it. This feature uses depth detection algorithms provided by the A11 Bionic chipset. It intelligently “cuts out” the subject’s face and, by manipulating lighting, emulates scene lighting, contour lighting, and other modes. Meet the A11 Bionic, Apple's new six-core chipset that's set to push the iPhone X (and iPhone 8 and 8 Plus) to unseen performance heights. With four energy-efficient processing cores and two high-performance ones, it's said to be 70% faster than the A10 chip inside the iPhone 7. We can't wait to put it to the test and see how that holds up. This improved performance is what allows Face ID to do its magic.

Face ID

The absence of a physical home button and a TouchID fingerprint scanner prompted engineers to implement a completely new biometric system in the iPhone X, called FaceID. Using a combination of sensors on the front, it creates a facial depth map using over 30,000 points on the face. With a low error rate, FaceID promises to be more accurate than TouchID ever was. You can also use it with Apple Pay.

Better than Retina - only Super Retina

5.8-inch (although Apple does not deny that the usable area is slightly smaller) OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, wide color gamut according to the P3 standard, high resolution of 2436x1125 pixels, support for a contrast ratio of 1,000,000: 1 and HDR? It sounds very tempting and promising.

Loud stereo speakers

The iPhone X also received a pair of stereo speakers, like last year's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. But the manufacturer worked on the sound component and increased the maximum volume by 25%. It's very good when we're talking about about content consumption, and it will help not to miss a call in a noisy place.

New features in AR

Augmented reality features aren't exclusive to the iPhone X, but they're worth mentioning. Augmented reality is set to take the world by storm when iOS 11 arrives. With this, things like animated emoji, colloquially called "animoji" and a bunch of interesting apps and games are likely to quickly fill the App Store.

Bluetooth 5.0

Using the latest generation of Bluetooth, iPhone X is capable of transferring data twice as fast as Bluetooth 4.2-enabled devices and over greater distances, which is definitely great news no matter how you look at it. All that remains is to wait for the mass appearance of accessories that work with this standard.

Qi wireless charging

You can easily charge your iPhone X with a Qi-compatible wireless charger. Apple is set to work with several Qi charger manufacturers to promote their accessories in the Apple Store and make them available to the general public. A dedicated charging mat for Apple AirPower is planned for early 2018. It can be used to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time.

All information presented in the list is true. Now we will take a closer look at the features of the flagship.

Display

Cupertino equipped the Apple iPhone 10 with a frameless OLED display with a physical resolution of Super Retina 2436 x 1125 pixels, added support for HDR10, True Tone, like on the iPad Pro, and 3D Touch. The maximum screen brightness is 625 nits, and its body-to-body ratio is 81.49%. The glass surface has an oleophobic coating that repels moisture and fingerprints.

In addition, the new Super Retina display allows you to view HDR content on Netflix and YouTube. With pixel densities of 458 ppi and DCI-P3 color space, iPhone X is designed to deliver a premium experience.

Hardware and operating system

iPhone X relies on the all-new A11 Bionic processor, which has six 64-bit cores. They operate with a nominal clock frequency of 2.5 GHz and are equipped with a high-performance graphics accelerator. It also has an M11 coprocessor and a neural engine on board, the characteristics of which allow it to support machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The chipset itself is produced using a 10-nanometer process technology, which can significantly reduce energy consumption, but at the same time improves the performance of the smartphone. Thanks to the Apple A11, the iPhone 10 is faster than some MacBook Pro 13” 2017. Inside there is also 3 GB of RAM, 64 or 256 GB of internal memory to choose from.

This iPhone model comes pre-installed with the iOS 11 operating system, which will be released on September 19.

Cameras in iPhone 10

iPhone 10 received a pair of 12-megapixel main camera modules with a dual optical stabilizer. The first has an aperture of f/1.8, and the second - f/2.4. These are good indicators among current mobile solutions. The front camera has a 7-megapixel lens with support for on-screen Retina Flash and HDR.

The main camera powers the smartphone's augmented reality capabilities. The ARKit tool is already available to millions of users, but the iPhone X takes this to the next level with its TrueDepth camera on the front and, obviously, on the back.

Autonomy

Inside the metal-glass case there is a Li-Po battery. Thanks to it, according to the manufacturer, the iPhone X lasts 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7. It will last 21 hours in talk mode, and 60 hours in music playback. Apple has equipped it with fast charging, although the included power adapter won't provide enough power. Therefore, we will have to buy a MacBook charger.

iPhone 10 sales start date in Russia and price
