Stylist, style coach

We have all noticed that fashion has changed a lot over the past ten years - the approach to creating things has changed, new interpretation There are no longer any definitive “yes” or “no” styles; fashion is centered on the individual, and this allows it to continually change.

Without even knowing it, we have become participants in the media revolution. A hundred years ago, information spread very slowly to appear in printed edition the text about fashion went through a long journey of statements, and only after some time could the reader see it.

In 2008, when social networks gained widespread popularity, information began to spread at lightning speed. People became its main bearer - opinion leaders appeared, the masses began to produce fashion for themselves.

Today I want to talk about how the way of presenting information has changed the vector of fashion development. The fusion style embodies new look on fashion and a new way of adapting what we see around us.

Factor 1

The woman leaves the stage and gets closer to real life. More subtle methods of self-expression become available to her. The perception of women in fashion can be easily tracked by the most popular faces of different eras. The most popular top model of recent years, Cara Delevingne, set the trend for spontaneous, easy and accessible charm.

Factor 2

Modern fashion has moved away from the idea of originality and the idea of creating something completely new and unique. The same solutions (in in this case a combination of soft pink with dark skin) are used in different situations, be it an Instagram picture or Rihanna’s evening look.

Factor 3

Two directions have been established: things are divided into art objects and practical clothes that are easy to wear and mix with each other. In order to attract attention, clothing should be slightly exaggerated. Exaggeration, which is not applicable in real life, looks natural on a computer screen. It becomes the promotion of new ideas.

Factor 4

Fashion begins to live in a real environment. When choosing an image, it is important to focus on how it will look in the place where you will appear in it.

Factor 5

Bright eclectic combinations, sometimes even very bold, are another way to express a woman’s individuality.

Factor 6

There are fewer complaints about the new standard of the human body. The most popular female body ideal, the one most cited in the media, is a tall, athletic silhouette with long legs, narrow hips, broad shoulders and a disproportionately small head. Making it exaggeratedly round and fragile does not work. There is also nothing to emphasize about it, because it is neutral. And one more thing: in most cases, clothes do not fit the body, but become a kind of armor, a convention.

Factor 7

The main style directions have acquired a new concept. A woman in sportswear impresses with her brightness, energy and strength - not exactly feminine qualities that have now become very attractive. For the same reasons, masculine style is not losing ground, and military clothing is actively making friends with femininity.

Fashion in modern world is designed to play the role of a kind of litmus that determines a person’s lifestyle and social status. With the development of humanity, views on beauty, style and “decent appearance” have also changed.

To be fair, it is worth noting that the styles of modern fashion are very diverse, and fashion today is much more democratic than the fashion of past centuries. Today's fashionistas are lucky - they can choose trends and styles at their own discretion, taking into account the individual characteristics of their appearance. But without knowledge of styles and fashion trends, it’s unlikely to be done correctly. In this article we will talk about modern fashion trends.

History of modern fashion

Modern fashion trends in clothing are direct heirs to the fashion of the past. To understand the principles of fashion development and adequately assess the significance of trends, you must have at least minimal knowledge about the history of fashion.

It is not necessary to delve into the subtlest vicissitudes of fashion development. Just analyze and remember characteristic features fashion periods from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day

1900-1920 Modern. Women are getting rid of corsets, which are being replaced by underwear with hard inserts (underwires). Of course, you can’t call it freedom, but at least the underwear has stopped distorting the natural silhouette and deforming internal organs girls. Fashion includes oriental ethnic motifs and exotic fabrics - silk, brocade. High waists and deep necklines are in fashion; after 1915, floor-length evening dresses were shortened and now reached the ankles. Cuts have come into fashion, and quite revealing ones at that.

Since the 1920s, the boyish silhouette has come into fashion. Busty beauties bandage their breasts, trying to make them smaller. Long strings of pearls (up to 2 meters), strong tanning and... The most desperate fashionistas even took iodine baths to achieve a dark red-brown skin tone, on which pearls would look especially impressive. Bright makeup compensated for the lack of femininity - dark shadows made the eyes deeper, and bright scarlet lipstick emphasized the lips.

Since 1925, skirts have been rapidly losing length, and already in 1926 the legendary one appeared - the most popular model of the twentieth century. The most popular style of the 20s was Egyptian ethnicity - eyeliner, graphic bobs, tight dresses.

In the 30s, women tired of rebellion and returned to calmer outfits. Skirts are lengthened again; to emphasize a slender girl’s figure, a bias cut is used. Cap sleeves and lanterns are at the peak of popularity, and the emphasis of the silhouette shifts to the shoulders.

By the end of the 30s, silhouettes became even stricter - influenced Great Depression and the tense political situation in Europe.

In the 1940s, style remains strict, industry works for the needs of the war, so women have no time for grace. There is a catastrophic shortage of fabrics, decor, draperies and other “excesses” completely disappear from the outfits.

At the end of the war, everything changes radically - women wear bows and begin to emphasize their waists (thank you).

The fashion of the 60s is Twiggy, minimalism, bright colors and some infantilism in outfits (babydoll style), A-line miniskirts, geometric prints and boots at any time of the year.

The 1970s are hippies, denim, the popularity of ethnic and folk music, the emergence of punk and disco style, shirt dresses, bell-bottoms and ponchos.

In the 80s, they wore fishnet tights, sports-style outfits, knitted dresses, and the general craze for aerobics brought neon colors and sneakers, leggings and headbands to the top trends.

In the 90s, at the peak of popularity of grunge and unisex, girls strive for comfort in everyday clothes. It's fashionable to take care of environment and refuse natural fur.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, it has become more difficult to talk about fashion trends - they are becoming more and more differentiated, giving fashionistas the right to independently choose the trends they like. We remember a lot of experiments with colors and styles (not always successful) and a lot of nudity.

Modern fashion trends

Modern youth fashion is an endless experiment with color, texture and style. Fashionistas today can choose from many fashionable styles:

  1. Vintage. A return to the outfits of the 1920s-60s.
  2. Glamor. Luxury and chic of the “golden age” of Hollywood.
  3. Swag. Bright (even flashy) clothes that combine sports and glamorous items. Very popular in modern street fashion.
  4. Ethnic style. Elements and motifs of traditional costumes of the peoples of the world.
  5. Unisex. Blurring gender boundaries - women and men dress very similar, almost the same.
  6. Military. Outfits reminiscent of military uniforms. Characteristic details: shoulder straps, chevrons and vents, emphasized shoulders, sparkling buttons.
  7. Romantic style. Soft colors, floral prints, thin knitted cardigans and elegant shoes.
  8. Eclecticism. Mixing contrasting styles.
  9. Futurism. Simple silhouettes, but complex cuts, glossy sparkling materials and unusual accessories.
  10. Minimalism. Simple silhouette, ascetic design.

Modern fashion for plus-size women is aimed at visual correction and elimination of existing figure imbalances. Thus, girls with full hips are well suited for classic fitted silhouettes that allow you to visually “stretch” your figure, clothes with a peplum and decor that creates a vertical pattern.

I often hear: “I’m not interested in fashion,” “I don’t strive to be fashionable,” “I just need to update my wardrobe, pick out outfits.”

What does it mean to be fashionable?

Fashionable is a person who adheres to fashion. Fashion is often associated with extravagance and the indispensable possession of the latest fashion items.

Of course, one should not blindly follow fashion, become its victim and perceive the absence of fashionable velvet boots or a jacket as a tragedy.

But we, willingly or unwillingly, buy current, modern things.

The image of a person is perceived as a whole. For example, watching a film, even without sound, by a number of signs we can unmistakably determine in which years the events take place.

Fashion is not divorced from life!

Fashion is influenced by politics, economics, new technologies, and social development.

Fashion industry studies our needs, anticipates trends for which we will be ready!

Life changes, women's lives change, and it is impossible to avoid it!

According to established tradition, new clothing collections for the spring-summer are shown in the fall in New York, London, Milan and Paris, and in the winter for the fall-winter of the next year, and only a few months later they appear on sale.

The rhythm of life accelerates and changes are happening in the fashion business. Burberry, Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford deviate from the rules and at fashion weeks show collections of the current season, which can be purchased immediately after the show.

High fashion demonstrates advanced design ideas that reflect fashion trends of the near future. Of course, it will take some time to creatively comprehend and implement them.

Eat fashion trends, which we accept immediately, but there are also those that we need to get used to, to understand where, how and what to wear it with.

Some people want to stand out from the crowd and quickly perceive, while others, on the contrary, want to be like everyone else.

Two years ago I wrote an article. Then Karl Lagerfeld suggested that we wear sneakers with a classic Chanel-style suit. This is understandable, because it’s in fashion healthy image life, besides, in our fast-paced times, there is a lot to be done and convenience and comfort come to the fore.

The trend was not immediately accepted but time has passed and now we are not surprised to see men in a classic suit and sneakers, and women in a dress and sports shoes.

Almost all fashion trends of that time are still relevant today. So what has changed in fashion over the past few years?

Modern fashion is a creative game in which there are no rules!

Generally accepted standards are a thing of the past. Until recently, the ability to match tone-on-tone shoes, bags, scarves, gloves, and hats was considered a model of taste and style. Today such a person looks archaic and out of date!

The game of oppositions is relevant, unusual combinations, unexpected combinations of accessories, mixing styles, seasons, conceptually distant colors, textures, in other words,Mix&Match.

Most often our the wardrobe was divided into three main groups: clothes for work, casual and weekend.

Today things from one group easily move into another.

It would seem velvet suit or jacket exceptionally elegant things, but no, they are worn with Cossacks and a large bag, jeans and shorts.

Oversized sweatshirts, denim jackets fits perfectly into .

Transparent, lace blouses worn with a down jacket or bomber jacket.

Shiny trousers and skirts with a simple top.

Silk dresses in linen style put on a turtleneck with long sleeves or worn with a sports jacket.

If the climate allows, then .

It is not surprising that coats are worn with open shoes, and dresses with boots.

Modern fashion has also shaken the theory of harmonious color combinations.

The bravest ones go against the rules and cleverly mix complex prints and colors.

The concept of a stylish image has also undergone changes.

Now this is not an image consistent in one style, but a mix of styles, brands, textures, and prints.

Surely many of you, consciously or not, use these techniques for creating relevant images.

Modern fashion gives us freedom of choice,

the opportunity to express yourself through clothes and that’s great!

But making a choice is much more difficult than acting within the given rules.

It would seem that there are no rules, wear whatever you want, but why do some look harmonious and natural, while others cause bewilderment and it’s immediately clear that there’s something wrong with the image?!

How to become modern?

To be modern you need to know yourself, the proportions of your body, fashion trends not only in clothes, but also in shoes, accessories, and makeup. When creating an image, understand where you are going with this, what impression you want to make.

Knowing this and having good taste, among the many proposals of fashion designers you can always choose what suits you.

Taste is like a muscle, you need to train it!

You can develop your taste and sense of style and I see this in my clients, many of whom have themselves become role models.

Be bold, experiment, and I’m always ready to help!

Anna Harvey - the legend of British Vogue magazine and Princess Diana's stylist - knows everything about how to look chic, regardless of age and financial status. Constantly changing fashion is unlikely to provide you with style, but following simple rules will help in shaping and maintaining it.

We are in website We agree that style must be maintained at any time, so we generously share the learned advice from the star stylist.

1. Follow the A-line rule

So-called A-line skirts suit almost everyone. This cut makes the look airy and light. But when choosing such a skirt, you need to remember that you shouldn’t wear a top with the same loose cut; it’s better to give preference to something tight-fitting. The same rule works the other way around: if you choose a loose top, then the bottom should be narrow. Anna says the main thing is to remember balance.

2. Don't dress your age

If you're wearing things that match your age, then you're probably wearing something that ages you. The main thing to remember is that clothes have no age categories. You can wear whatever you like, but how you look in it depends only on your self-confidence.

But of course, do not forget about balance and harmony in clothing, so as not to look sloppy in a robe or out of place in a miniskirt. Age is not the main thing, but when creating an elegant style, you still shouldn’t forget about it.

Anna advises to look not stylish and fashionable, but simply cool. And for inspiration, he suggests looking up to celebrities with good taste: Natalia Vodianova, Kate Winslet, Daria Zhukova.

3. Be careful with pleated skirts

According to the stylist, only those with a slender figure can wear pleated skirts from the waistline: this fit puts emphasis on the sides and stomach. For those who do not want to focus on the waist, it is better to choose pleated skirts with a yoke that start from the hips.

4. Take your adult daughter shopping

The stylist says that you need to go shopping with the right company, so that later you don’t end up buying something that doesn’t suit you at all. Friends may say that your clothes suit you out of politeness, and sometimes out of envy. Therefore, it is ideal to take your daughter with you - an adult girl who will honestly tell you which image is best to choose.

5. Don't be afraid of bright colors

As Anna herself notes, she regrets that for a long time she was fixated on a black and white wardrobe, limiting herself to colorful things. Colored things lift the mood and create a positive atmosphere around their owner.

But if you still want to go in black, then the stylist advises to complement the look with beautiful jewelry. Anna also notes that in this case you should not forget about tights of a suitable tone.

6. Buy the right size

Regarding shopping, Anna draws attention to several points:

  • You should always remember that loose clothes can make your figure look thinner, but tight ones will obviously emphasize what they shouldn’t.
  • Take coats and skinny jeans at least one size larger. Regarding the coat, everything is explained by the fact that when you put it on a sweater, it should fall nicely, so when buying, be guided by your feelings, and not by the size on the tag.
  • If something suits you, take several items at once. Many will agree that finding the perfect item for yourself is not easy, so it would be wise to take a spare of such items, especially if it is a black turtleneck or a white shirt. And take perfectly fitting trousers so that you can fit one pair under socks with heels, and the other pair under flat-soled shoes. The same applies to things of the same cut, but different colors. Kate Middleton is an example of a woman who knows how to shop wisely.
  • When buying a jacket, always check how comfortable you are in it and whether it fits you in size. After putting on your jacket, stretch your arms forward to make sure it fits perfectly along your back and shoulders. If there is an uncomfortable tension or folds in the armpit area, then such a jacket is too small for you and will not fit you properly.

7. Choose tights that suit your skin tone

Anna recommends choosing low-rise tights that match your skin tone as closely as possible. The main goal that you should achieve by wearing tights is the confusion and questions of people in the style of “Is she wearing tights?”

If you are still going to buy colored tights, then it is better to take them a size larger so that the color is uniform throughout the entire leg and does not “disappear” when stretched. It is worth remembering that shiny tights make your legs look thicker, while matte tights make your legs look thinner. The only exception for tights with glitter is summer: at this time they look natural on the leg.

8. Avoid leggings if possible.

Anna Harvey advises avoiding leggings. But if they are an integral part of your life, then when wearing them, combine them with long tunics and dresses. And when purchasing, pay attention to the quality of the material, which should not be transparent. In addition, among models, give preference to those with a high rise to avoid the need to constantly tighten them.

9. Choose tunic dresses

Tunic dresses are a versatile option that can serve as a separate outfit or as an addition to trousers or trousers. Anna recommends that if you are tall enough (so that the tunic ends above your knee), then you can wear it with a straight skirt. This look will make you trendy and stylish.

When buying a tunic, choose one with set-in sleeves rather than a kimono-type model. The last option will visually shorten the top of your body.

10. Prioritize comfort

Even in a dress you can feel comfortable if it suits you. Anna's wardrobe consists mainly of cashmere and silk dresses with long sleeves, which are both comfortable and elegant. The stylist also recommends not to be afraid of closed dresses: they are suitable for ladies of absolutely any age.

Speaking about jewelry, Anna notes that family jewelry will look appropriate and advantageous only on young girls or ladies of advanced age. She advises everyone else to experiment with accessories, and for those under 40, you can generally try wearing different earrings.

11. Earrings are as important as mascara.

Anna is convinced: earrings, regardless of their design, are as necessary for every woman as mascara. But she notes that it is better to choose not jewelry, but precious or semi-precious jewelry with diamonds or pearls. A good pair of earrings can help highlight your face and complete your look.

12. Don't dress completely sporty.

Comfort and convenience when choosing clothes for the day is the key to success. According to Anna, she is glad that the sports style has become fashionable, but at the same time she does not recommend dressing completely in sportswear: this way you expose yourself to the danger of looking sloppy.

It is better to complement a sporty look with interesting accessories and bags, and replace sneakers and trainers with more elegant shoes.

13. You can wear a biker jacket at any age.

Some events, such as weddings, require that part of the celebration will take place on the ground or lawn. Therefore, before the start of the event, be sure to clarify this point so as not to make a mistake in choosing shoes. After all, the situation when your heel sinks into the ground, catching all the dirt on itself, is not a pleasant one, and taking off your shoes at such an event is clearly not the best option: it will immediately destroy the whole style.

To avoid all these troubles, Anna advises choosing:

  • Flat shoes.
  • Wide-heeled shoes and sandals: This type of shoe can perfectly complement a pair of stilettos if the event involves a subsequent transition indoors.
  • Wedge shoes: This option can be chosen if you feel uncomfortable wearing flat shoes at an event. Initially, only flight attendants wore such shoes, but then Prada introduced its own model, thereby making wedge shoes fashionable and elegant.

16. Wear long skirts if you're over 40

For women over 40, it is recommended to choose skirts that are knee-length or below. But their style should not be straight - it is better to give preference to a flowing cut. Well, if you are still confident in the condition of your legs and want to wear a shorter skirt, Anna recommends choosing high-quality material and not forgetting about tights.

What do you think about fashion and style? Do you have your own rules that you follow to always look impressive?
